Back the blue…unless they come for you

Blue lives matter. I believe that. I’m a strong believer in law enforcement, but I’ve observed a trend on the right that makes me sick: the practice of supporting the police…unless they take action that you find…embarrassing.

It happened on January 6 when people who had previously chanted “Back The Blue” as a mantra threatened and attacked officers for the simple sin of not getting out of their way so they could go on a rampage. And don’t even try to spin this with whataboutism by pointing out the sins of the left with riots by groups like BLM or antifa. I have consistently spoken out against this wrongdoing. The thing is, I’ve come to expect it from them…not from those who claim to be the party of “law and order”.

It started with the FBI executing a search warrant for Donald Trump’s house and the right went nuts! They moved 180 degrees to attack law enforcement as soon as Truth Social’s first post was published. But who needs facts when you’re outraged? They accused the DOJ of being politically armed. (This from the crowd chanting “Lock her up” in 2016.) Just because you don’t like who law enforcement focused on doesn’t mean they’ve been militarized. In America, no one is supposed to be above the law. (Read this sentence several times to emphasize it because I cannot shout it in a written column.)

The most used statement was: “If they can do that to a former president, imagine what they can do to you.” And they are right. If evidence presented to a judge warrants a search warrant, you will also be served by federal agents. This is called due process. This applies to all of us, regardless of past or current positions.

Florida State Representative and U.S. House candidate Andrew Sabatini said, “It’s time for us in the Florida Legislature to call an emergency legislative session and amend our laws regarding federal agencies. Immediately sever all ties with the DOJ. Any FBI agent performing law enforcement duties outside the jurisdiction of our state should be arrested on sight.” Here’s an official pushing for war between state and federal law enforcement…and he’s running for federal office! If that doesn’t set off alarm bells, I don’t know what will.

Walking, talking punchline Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted, “DEFUND THE FBI!” Greene may be too dumb to know more, but she was inadvertently the most honest and transparent here. Those people who attack the DOJ and the FBI before they have the facts are proving that they don’t actually support law enforcement except when it’s practical and politically advantageous and they believe that certain elites (especially their ringleader) are above the law and should be exempt from legal process.

By the way, two bits of information to remember as we go: (1) While the right is demanding that the DOJ make the search warrant public, it potentially already is. Trump has a copy. He is legally allowed to make it public, but at the time of this writing, he has refused to do so. (2) Keep in mind that Trump signed a law in 2018 that toughened the penalty for the unauthorized removal and retention of classified documents from one year to five and made it a criminal offense.

Listen, I understand that law enforcement at all levels acted inappropriately and even illegally. I am not naive. But when you assume and claim police corruption without evidence, don’t expect to be believed again when you try to portray yourself as pro-police. I know I won’t believe you.
