J’s Fitness: Cumnock gymnasium nominated for Scottish award

A Cumnock-based gym is hoping to make waves at a Scottish awards ceremony next month.

J’s Fitness recently won the coveted award for Best Health and Fitness Company in Ayrshire, and now they’re hoping to take it a step further.

After winning the Ayrshire Prize last month, the gymnasium are now moving into the Scottish category, where they will compete against gymnasiums from across the country.

From humble beginnings after being established by friends Jamie Wilson and Jamie McAllister, the gym is now celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

Jamie Wilson now runs the business, with the help of a talented staff.

“Having started where we were, reaching this peak is absolutely incredible,” said Jamie Wilson.

“It’s the customers who make it what it is. Everyone who comes to the gym helps make it what it is today.

“It is the customers and all the staff who deserve this past award and to be nominated across Scotland.”

The achievement of winning the regional Ayrshire award is the result of an anonymous nomination – and Jamie still has no idea where that came from.

He added: “Normally when you attend these events you have to pay to register. But whoever nominated us had already paid our registration fees and everything.

“It’s an amazing gesture and we still don’t know who did it. I asked who it was, but no one admitted taking credit for it.”

Jamie credits his own fitness journey with giving him the knowledge and ability to deliver successful service.

At his peak, Jamie said he weighed around 19 stone, but he believes having been in that situation and being able to relate to customers is one of the reasons the gym has had its fair share of success.

“One day, a friend of mine changed my life and transformed me.

“I met Jamie McAllister when we were at Visions and we decided to go into the business on our own.

“I’ve walked the weight loss journey from my heaviest to where I am right now, and now I’m happy to pass that knowledge on and it’s been an amazing 10 years.”

Looking ahead to the ceremony on November 6, Jamie would like to acknowledge everyone’s hard work over the years that has brought the gymnasium to where it is today.

“I want to absolutely thank everyone who has supported the gym over the years. This includes customers, staff, family members and everyone.

“If it weren’t for these people, we wouldn’t be where we are today and I just wish Jamie Mac could get that accolade too.”
