News: 16 NATO Allies and partners participate in BALTOPS 22 exercise, 07-Jun.-2022
Fourteen NATO Allies as well as two NATO partner countries, Finland and Sweden, are currently participating in Exercise Baltic Operations (BALTOPS 22) with over 45 ships, over 75 aircraft and 7,500 personnel.
This first annual sea-focused exercise kicked off in Stockholm, Sweden on 05 June. It takes place in the Baltic region from June 5-17 and provides a unique training opportunity to build combined response capabilities essential to maintaining freedom of navigation and security in the Baltic Sea. This is the 51st iteration of the series of exercises, which began in 1972.
Participating nations are Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States. These nations will exercise a range of capabilities demonstrating the inherent flexibility of maritime forces. Exercise scenarios include amphibious operations, artillery, anti-submarine warfare, air defense, mine clearance operations, explosive ordnance disposal, unmanned underwater vehicles and response medical.
BALTOPS 22 takes place in Sweden and coincides with the 500th anniversary of the Swedish Navy. BALTOPS 22 also provides more robust medical response scenarios, especially during personnel recovery training aboard a submarine. The exercise builds on previous iterations by enhancing space domain integration through the NATO Space Center.
