The nonprofit helps those recovering from addiction through fitness

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) — For Derek Padilla, the road to recovery began more than four years ago.

“It was the courts that ordered me to do better and in that moment I found myself needing and wanting something different, knowing that I was taking a road I didn’t have to take. “, did he declare.

After the pandemic shutdowns, he found Reps4Recoverya non-profit organization that offers CrossFit group workouts to people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.

Membership is free and all you need is a commitment.

“Through my addiction I felt like I destroyed my body to the point that I couldn’t do anything, but the coaches here and everyone here gave me the confidence to try new things and push. a little louder,” Padilla said. “So it went from scary to challenging.”

Executive director Sophie Moeller said people can make progress towards an individual goal through exercise.

“You get a sense of community; you are exposed to a healthier lifestyle,” she said. “Not only do we do our fitness work, but we partner with Reno Food Systems and they harvest fresh produce for us that we pick up every Sunday morning so our members get fresh produce.”

Over the past seven years, Reps4Recovery has helped approximately 200 residents with substance use disorder.

Through partnerships with Ambrose Fitness, North Valley Fitness and Upstate Nevada, it was able to expand to other gyms.

After a few years in the program, Padilla is now a coach. This came after being nominated for the non-profit Coaching Program, in which nominated members win a scholarship for a fitness certificate.

“Now I’m very proud of myself and the direction I’m going, the people I can help help me more than I can help them,” he said.

Through consistency and passion, members say they find purpose.

The organization also offers a series of speakers on the second Sunday of each month.
