USI renovates former physical activity center into a new athletics facility
EVANSVILLE, Indiana (WFIE) – Southern Indiana University has renovated its physical activity center, now known as the Screaming Eagles Complex, into a new track and field facility.
Officials say the three-story building includes new exercise and training facilities, indoor batting cages, eight locker rooms and a team meeting room with movie seats.
Athletic Director Jon Mark Hall says: “It’s really cool to see the student-athletes coming back for the first time if they’ve been gone all summer. They saw it shut down last spring, but now they see it with equipment in the weight room, equipment in the workout room, and see the smiles on their faces and know that they’re in a school that’s very proud of what we do, that’s a really cool feeling.
Officials say the new weight room has garnered most of the attention at the facility. The last room in the complex still under construction is the new swimming pool.
They say the complex will benefit every USI team. Student-athletes will also have access to lounges and community spaces to study or relax, which the coaches believe will give their athletes balance.
Volleyball Head Coach Randi Raff said: “Thinking about the big picture of everything they have on their plate, so that they can be centrally located and have all the meeting space and The training facilities we have, help them manage their time. “
