Wedding of the Week: ‘It was the Baltic’ as Cork couple Heather and Greg said ‘I do’ to Kerry
Cork couple Heather Connolly and Greg O’Brien got engaged on Christmas Day 2018 in New York City.
Their paths had crossed a year and a half earlier. “We met on a sunny day in June 2017 at Greg’s local pub in Blackpool,” Heather said. “I was there with my friend Sabrina Daly when Greg walked up and we had a chat and it went from there.”
Greg surprised Heather by asking her about the first holiday season spent away from home for the two of them.
“It was very romantic, in our hotel room on Christmas morning. I had no idea he would come up with! Greg planned it with my sister, Dawn! Heather said.
Fast forward a few years, and last February the couple bought their own home in Ballyphehane, where they live with Greg’s daughter and Heather’s stepdaughter Abbey.
And in November, Heather, from Ballyphehane, and Greg, from Farranree, headed to the first destination where they enjoyed a getaway together to exchange their wedding vows.
“We got married at Muckross Park Hotel & Spa – the reception and afters were held there,” the bride said.
“We chose Muckross because it was the first place we went together, basically – and we fell in love with the hotel.”
Paul Corcoran officiated the ceremony, while award-winning wedding photographer Mícheál O’Sullivan captured the big day on camera, including a photoshoot in Killarney National Park.
Daughter Abbey O’Brien also played the lead role of bridesmaid on the big day, along with Greg’s niece Olivia O’Donovan.
“It was also my anniversary on our wedding day – I had to make sure the anniversary would never be forgotten – so Abbey presented me with gifts from herself and Greg that morning. was special,” Heather said.
Also with them were the bride’s parents, Joy and Mick Connolly, and the groom’s mother, Kathleen O’Brien, and her partner, Billy O’Brien.
Heather’s sister, Dawn Tynan, served as her bridesmaid while her friend, Sabrina Daly, served as bridesmaid with her niece, Mia Tynan.
Greg’s brothers, Darren O’Brien and Keith O’Brien, served as groomsman and groomsman, respectively, while his friend, Danny O’Leary, served as groomsman.
“We both thought we would have a great wedding because it was booked before Covid, and thank goodness we were able to stick to the original date, and we never had to change it,” Heather said.
“Even though there were a few faces missing, the seats were so well placed that we didn’t have that feeling of an empty room. The day itself flew by, everything was going according to plan and the rain even held back while the photos were being taken – even though it was the Baltic, I don’t think I could feel it; adrenaline flowed for the day!”
Heather bought her wedding dress at Vows in Blarney and the bride’s hair was done by Joann Henderson with makeup by Sandra Flynn.
“Greg and the groomsmen and several guests rented their suits from Morley’s, Cork,” the bride added.
The videography service was provided by DG Video; with Tie the Knot Weddings creating the flower arrangements.
The newlyweds hope to have their honeymoon this summer. “Greece would definitely be our choice when things calm down,” the bride said.
Heather is a pharmacy technician and Greg works in the airline industry.
